V&A: What is Luxury?

Many may feel they understand what the term Luxury means, though often we have a terribly difficult time trying to define it. Some may say that luxury is comfort, is pure quality, whilst others will say that it is a lack of worry and comfort. Perhaps it is a bit of both? Well, at the V&A Museum, a recent exhibition has opened discussing this idea, and it has been a wonderful treat.

The History of Mayfair

The name ‘Mayfair’ comes from an annual fair that took place on what is now Shepherd Market. Lasting a fortnight from May 1st, the open fields and farmland of the Mayfair area would be a marketplace for live stock, and expanded to include booths of theatres, jugglers, gambling, and sausage stalls. Eventually, the raucous of the fair, which attracted the ruffians from all across London, began to disturb the peace for the local royalty. This led to a clamp down on the festivities in 1709.

Following on from London Fashion Week, the Weekend plays host to over 150 brands, including men’s and women’s fashion, accessories, and jewelry.
